Teaching ESL to Notice Grammar

Dear Teacher Aleida and Classmate

Francis Noonan, brings this theory of “noticing” grammar  based on the studies that have shown that “students who have explicit grammar instruction as part of theirs study achieve a higher level of grammatical accuracy that those who do not”,

The idea is that if learners pay attention to the form and meaning of certain language structures in input, contributing to the internalization of the rule. (Batstone, 1996).

In practice the teachers can help students to notice target forms by Explicit Instruction, the frequency of the certain structure. All of the teaching activities are structured to help our students to find the implicit rule grammar in the exercise, like understanding the grammar point where they will analyze the data and “discover” the rule.

I found the lesson plan for this method very interesting, because it is  another and different way to teach English grammar.  It will be very helpful in our daily teaching activities according the topic presented.

The final goal is that our students can communicate in a fluency and accurate way possible in the target language.

Greetings,

Dear Professor  Linares and classmates:

What I have learned about the lesson plan presentations was that, even if we are prepared with the activities writing on the lesson plan, the reality and dynamic of the class will create different and challenging scenarios, and we must be prepared to deal with them.

Another tip highlighted by Professor Linares, is  the importance of not ignore our students questions’ or doubts they have, for just paying attention to develop the activities outlined on the lesson plan.

Among other good ideas we saw along the presentations, I liked the importance as teachers should be “everywhere” in the classroom, during the developing of the class, this ability will be acquired through the years, while we are getting experience in the art of teaching.

Thanks you very much

Things I learned in class today…

Hi Ms. Aleyda and classmates

In the micro-teaching presentations that we had in teaching grammar class today I learned two or three things about planning and teaching a class. To begin, I learned that the class has to be flexible according to its needs and development  and that improvising is often used within the classroom in order to improve an activity or re enforse a certain subject. Also, that as teachers we have to be aware of everyting that is going on around us, in the classroom with our students and the response that they have to whatever is that we´re teaching at the moment. That is really difficult to manage time and all the activities that we might have prepared for the class, correctly.

I believe it was a very productive day for me, and hopefully for all of you classmates as well.

Have a nice weekend.

Micro teaching.

Hi everybody:

I have learned today for the micro teaching some new things. One of them is that we should not always be worry to follow the lesson plan because things in the classroom can change for different reasons; when we are in the classroom we have to pay attention how students react, for what we are doing,  and our object  always have to be sure if the students are really learning not just to follow the lesson plan no matter what happen with students. Another thing is that definitely we should  teach grammar based on context, in real life situations and be creative in the classroom. Discipline is very important to maintain the control of our classroom and obtain a good environment for the student´s learning.

See you, take care;

Gabriela Figueroa.
